Expanding the Global Market for New Drone Technologies
Expanding the Global Market for New Drone Technologies

Jul 25, 2020

Drones were originally designed for military applications. In recent times, they’re being deployed in a wide range of civilian roles ranging from search and rescue, surveillance, traffic monitoring, weather monitoring, fire-fighting, etc. The global commercial drone market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 17% up to 2023 across diversified industries. The top three addressable drone markets among them are infrastructure ($45.2B), agriculture ($32.4B), and logistics ($13B). Technology transformations changed the way businesses operate and created a promising environment in our daily business engagements. The global market potential for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is $21.47B, and the Indian UAV market is expected to touch $887.5M by 2021.

Classifications of Drones

Drones are classified on the basis of their weight, such as nano (<=250g), micro (>250g<=2kg), small (>2kg<=25kg), medium (>25kg <=150kg), and large (>150kg). Drones are also called crewless aerial vehicles (UAV), miniature pilotless aircraft, or flying mini-robots. All parts of drones are important for a smooth and safe flight. Electronics that play a critical role in drones are flight and speed controllers and communication systems.

Drone Flight Controller: This is the drone’s brain that interprets the input received from the receiver, GPS module, battery monitor, and onboard sensors and commands the drone. Most importantly, it’s responsible for regulating the motor speeds through ESC and for the steering of the drone.

Electronic Speed Controller (ESC): The controller is located in the mainframe of the drone, and it’s responsible for monitoring and varying the speed, direction, and variations in breaks of the drone during flight. The ESC is also responsible for converting DC battery power to AC power to propel the brushless motors.

Receiver & Transmitter: The receiver unit is responsible for the reception of radio signals sent to the drone through the controller. The transmitter is responsible for the transmission of radio signals from the controller. It’s recommended to have five channels provision to control a drone. Each radio signal has a standard code that helps in differentiating the signal from other signals in the air.

India’s Place in the Drone Market

India, the second-largest importer of UAVs, is re-aligning itself as an indigenous manufacturer. India’s Drone Draft Policy 2.0 and invitation for collaboration on Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) opens up the possibility for self-reliant technology. Industries, government, civil society, and academia in India are gathering to develop industry-friendly regulations that will support delivering consumer goods and medicines by drones. Driven by a societal motivation, supported by a workforce ready to lead, and a government open to new solutions in the public’s interest, India could become the global home for next-generation drone technologies.

Backed by 40 Years of Expertise

We contribute our 40 years of design and manufacturing expertise spanning multiple diverse markets. We look forward to discussing how we can deliver world-class products for OEMs across the globe. We understand our home Indian market, familiar with its vast regulatory and selling environments. We foster growth opportunities within India through our strong technology incubation ecosystem. We also assist global OEMs in entering the Indian market by leveraging the local supply chain and favorable operating environments for cost reductions.

Our flagship Chennai location opened in 2006 and lies within a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for electronics manufacturing, offering economic incentives for imports and exports. This primary facility is within 90 minutes of the Chennai seaport and 20 minutes to the international airport. Additional road and rail connectivity links to the rest of India and beyond and infrastructure advantages with faster import and export clearances. We also have labor force flexibility, both technical and manual, to scale to demand rapidly.
