Green Manufacturing is More Important than Ever

Green Manufacturing is More Important than Ever

Earth’s average surface temperature has risen about 2.12 degrees Fahrenheit since the late 19th century, a change driven largely by increased carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere and other human activities. Most of the warming occurred in the past 40 years, with the seven most recent years being the warmest. Earth-orbiting satellites and other technological advances have enabled scientists to collect data about our planet and its climate globally. This data, collected over many years, reveals the signals of climate change. [1]

Ice cores are drawn from Greenland, Antarctica, and tropical mountain glaciers show that Earth’s climate responds to changes in greenhouse gas levels. Ancient evidence can also be found in tree rings, ocean sediments, coral reefs, etc. This evidence reveals that current warming is occurring roughly 10 times faster than the average rate. Carbon dioxide from human activity is also increasing more than 250 times faster than natural sources after the last Ice Age. [1]

A majority of North America now agrees with the scientific community. The looming dangers of artificial climate change are genuine, and limitless profits today cannot come before the world we leave behind to future generations. More companies now talk of conservation and green manufacturing practices as the primary foundation of being a good corporate citizen.

But, with so many manufacturers opting for offshore manufacturing partners, how often do these words actually echo to the distant factory floor? Many North American OEMs remain with manufacturing vendors in China, where Beijing’s notorious smog problem may actually be intensified by global climate change. At the same time, an estimated 85% of river water near Shanghai is now considered unfit for human consumption. [2]
