Identification technologies play an essential role in the business strategy of the international custom tag designer and manufacturer that has over 15 years of experience in the RFID sector. Sreeram Srinivasan, CEO; Jeyakumar Nelson, Sr. VP of Sales & Marketing; and Sreedharan NG, Sr. VP of Engineering at Syrma, in an interview with RFID im Blick Global about the company‘s specialization in custom-built RFID tags for mass production, the product portfolio, and the future of RFID.

Customer-Specific Tags in all Sizes and Shapes

“Syrma SGS Technology focuses on designing and manufacturing custom RFID tags and RFID readers, as well as customized application solutions for asset tracking, product authentication, and performance measurement. 90% of the RFID tags we produce are custom-built tags for mass production. We manufacture up to 2M tags per month per customer. Within 6 to 8 weeks, the production rate can be increased by 100 or even 200%.

Jeyakumar: “The choice of custom products includes active and passive tags in all sizes and shapes. They cover all frequencies, such as LF, HF, and UHF. The company also focuses on the NFC market. The material varies from plastic over the glass to on-metal tags. The tags are used in logistics, waste management, industrial laundry, gaming, sports timing, and animal identification.” Sreeram: “We’ve noticed a strong movement towards UHF in the RFID market, as seen in India‘s Smart Cities program. Over 90 Indian cities will be equipped with HF and UHF RFID technology or UHF/NFC hybrid technology as part of the program within the next years.“

From Surgical Instruments to Animal Identification

Sreedharan: “Syrma focuses on miniature tags as tiny as 2 millimeters, as well as custom RFID tags that can resist extreme environments with temperatures of up to 250 degrees Celsius, aggressive chemicals, or high mechanical loads. They can detect temperature deviation, humidity, or corrosion. One customer needed on-metal and in-metal tags within proximity for constrained spaces, and Syrma met the criteria.” Syrma has also developed tags for insects as small as butterflies and ants for identification. One expanding market for RFID application is healthcare, where Syrma developed and manufactured miniature tags to track surgical instruments and medical consumables that survive autoclave temperature.

90 Indian Cities will Become Smart Cities

Sreeram: “We’ve noticed a strong movement towards UHF in the RFID market as seen in India‘s Smart Cities program. Over 90 Indian cities will be equipped with HF and UHF RFID technology or UHF/NFC hybrid technology as part of the program within the next years. IoT will push UHF technology forward. The importance of NFC in e-commerce is increasing to protect products with RFID authentication. UHF/NFC hybrid technologies will also become more important.”
